Our modern lives are often missing a sense of community. We all need a community of people for support, for sharing and for learning. Creating Community is a series on VintageAmanda where we have a virtual “cup of tea and a sit down” with a kindred spirit. This week we meet Siobhan and Alexandra from No More Dirty Looks.
I’ve been reading No More Dirty Looks ever since The Year of Beauty Detox in my early days of blogging.
What I love about Siobhan and Alexandra is that they’re all about natural beauty – but they’re also normal women living busy lives. So they write about what works, what they’ve tried and what they’d use again. They talk about homemade products, and reviews of natural beauty brands they love. But most importantly, they teach readers how to think about what’s we use on our skin!
I also love their Morning Routines series where real women share their real skincare routines.
As a natural beauty fan, it makes me feel a little less alone in the world. (Whereas most people react like: “You use WHAT on your face? You haven’t used shampoo since…when?!”)
So grab your cuppa, and let’s meet Siobhan and Alexandra…
Amanda: Where did it all begin? How did you get interested in natural beauty?
Siobhan & Alexandra: We thought it would be fun to get the Brazilian blowout, not realizing we’d be exposing ourselves to high levels of formaldehyde. This never crossed our minds even when we were given goggles and air masks! Once we figured it out we thought: what’s in everything else we are using?! The answers were not pretty.
What common misconceptions do readers have about natural beauty products?
S&A: That you’ll end up a stinky mess! And that these products don’t work. Neither could be further from the truth. The market has gotten so great and we love all our products more now than when we were using conventional cosmetics. Natural beauty can be luxurious and playful and fun!
What is the sneakiest ‘hidden’ bad ingredient that readers might not know about?
S&A Sadly it’s tough to name just one. But if we had to? Probably fragrance, which is in everything! Even, like, blush.
Do we really have to eliminate fragrance? Is it really that bad?
S&A The answer is a loud yes! Fragrance is loaded with mystery ingredients and one smell can take dozens of chemicals to make. This is a problem because many are known hormone disruptors but you won’t see them in the ingredient list because of trade secret lies. Plus, they sort of stink!
Why do you think it’s important for readers to be aware of the chemicals in their personal care products?
S&A: Because we live in a world where we can’t control most of the toxins we encounter in our air and water. But when it comes to what you put on and in your body, you CAN make better and more beautifying choices. And frankly, you should. Your health and your looks will thank you.
What are 3 tips you could offer super-busy readers to get started with cleaning up their beauty routine?
S&A: There are three tricks we always share and they have varying levels of difficulty.
- Easiest and a good start: Stop using anything with synthetic fragrance. Which is most [mass-market] things, unfortunately.
- Rely on sites like No More Dirty Looks for awesome product recommendations, knowing we only endorse truly clean cosmetics.
- Finally the most labor intensive, but also really fun (we swear!), is familiarizing yourself with ingredients and learning to read labels. It’s so gratifying!
Do you have any favorite DIY beauty recipes you can share?
S&A: Our DIY honey face wash is such a hit and so easy! Two ingredients and glowing skin! It’s especially good for oily skin or transitional skin between seasons.
Any final thoughts?
S&A We are having a ball doing this. It’s a labor of love and we get the feeling that comes across and can be a little infectious.
Clean can be glam AND effective! Trust us. Seeing is believing.
