I love soaking in a hot bath.
I take baths for stress relief, when I’m chilled in the winter, to unwind before sleeping, and when I feel like I’m catching a cold.
It’s especially great to take a bath infused with aromatherapy essential oils.
But at an herbal gathering this summer, I learned a new trick for making aromatherapy baths even more effective. And the best part is that it only takes about 30 seconds more than just dropping the oils directly in the bath.
What’s the problem?
Essential oils are made of … oil. And baths are filled with water.
Oil. Water. Don’t mix, right?
That’s why I’ve always said you need to add the essential oils, then swirl the water around to disperse them.
But even so, the oils float on the top of the water.
A better solution … from France:
I met Cathy Skipper from Herbalistes sans Frontieres this summer (which as an aside, is a brilliant idea – a central online community for people to preserve and share their traditional remedies from around the world!)
The French are really into their essential oils. They treat them as seriously powerful medicine, and as Cathy said, would never put them in the bath directly! (Quelle horreur!)
A better solution is to disperse the essential oils in some oil/fat first, and then add to the bath.
And her very favorite, easy way to do this? Add the essential oils to a Tablespoon of milk, and then pour it all in the bath.
Easy. Simple. Effective.
So, the next time you take an aromatherapy bath, put your essential oils in a little milk, swirl around, then add to the bath water. Parfait!
